Resurrection

Based on the novel by Leo Tolstoy

One April morning, the life of the protagonist, Dmitri Nekhlyudov, is turned upside down. He could have gone on living for pleasure – drinking coffee every morning, lingering in bed until noon, even marrying a charming young lady named Missy. But from this morning on, there is no return to his former life. That morning, he is summoned to court…

Tolstoy’s final novel is based on a real court case, recounted to the writer by the renowned lawyer Anatoly Koni. Tolstoy also wove into the story a personal episode from his youth.

Director Denis Khusniyarov is drawn to Resurrection as a story of a man who has lived his life and now stands near its end. Can a sinner find the true path? Who has the right to judge and punish? And is resurrection truly possible?
